Biography

Miran Krmelj had a difficult start in life with his father being killed in World War II and his mother dying in 1954. Raised by his sister, Krmelj went on to become a great ice hockey player who represented KHL Medveščak in Zagreb from 1963 until 1985. Despite playing in defense he still managed to score 149 goals for the club in 310 league matches. During the 1960s and 1970s he also played for the Yugoslavia national team, including competing at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics and the 1971 World Championships. After his playing career Krmelj founded his own travel agency business that worked with transporting athletes to various sporting events. His nephew Zvone Šuvak played ice hockey for Yugoslavia at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics.
