Biography

Andy Bloom was a weight thrower who competed in the shot put at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, just missing a medal with his fourth-place finish. Bloom attended Wake Forest University where he threw both the shot and discus and won the shot-discus double at the 1996 NCAA Championships, only the eighth person to complete that double.

Bloom won a shot gold medal at the 1999 World University Games, adding a discus silver at that event, matching the discus silver he had won in 1997. He also won a silver medal in the discus at the 1998 Goodwill Games. He was US Indoor Champion in the shot put in both 1999 and 2000. Bloom was world ranked #2 in the shot in 2000 and #5 in 1999. In the discus he was 10th in 1998 and 5th in 1999. He was ranked in the top 10 in the US in the shot from 1996-2002, and in the discus from 1995-2001 and 2004, with highs of #2 in the shot in 2000 and #2 in the discus in 1999.

Bloom graduated from Wake Forest in 1998 with a degree in mathematics education and later taught math at Ohlone College in Fremont, California. He also coached, serving as an assistant track coach at UC Davis and their strength and conditioning coach. Bloom was inducted into US Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
