Biography

Robert Protin was the top Belgian sprinter of the 1890s, winning the Belgian title from 1891-93, and the French title in 1893, also winning the French title on tricycles that year. In 1895 he won the World Sprint Championship. Protin competed several times at the Grand Prix de Paris but never placed well. His best year was 1895, as he won Grand Prix events in Firenze, Oostende and the Grand Prix d’Europe, in addition to setting a world track record for 500 metres. He also won four major titles in 1897, at Antwerpen, Oostende, Tervuren, and Wien.
