Biography

After skating with the Montreal L’est Cantonniers (1984-1986), the Shawinigan Cataractes (1986-1988), and the St-Jean Castors (1988-1989), ice hockey forward Patrick Lebeau was recruited by the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens in 1989, but he spent one more year in the junior leagues with the Victoriaville Tigres before making his professional début. During the 1990-1991 season, however, he only skated in two games with Montreal, spending most of his time instead with the American Hockey League’s Fredericton Canadiens, where he won the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award at the league’s top rookie. After playing exclusively with Fredericton during the 1991-1992 season he decided to try his luck with Team Canada at the 1992 Winter Olympics. At the tournament he suited up for eight games, scored one goal, and took home a silver medal as a member of the first Canadian national team to reach the Olympic podium since 1968. Upon his return he was traded to the NHL’s Calgary Flames but, once again, was limited in his league’s appearances, this time skating in only one game and spending the rest of the season with the International Hockey League’s Salt Lake Golden Eagles. The situation did not improve when he was traded to the Florida Panthers in 1993, and he spent all but four games of that year with the IHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones.

Fed up with North American hockey, Lebeau travelled overseas in 1994 and played in Switzerland with Zurcher SC (1994-1997) and HC La Chaux-de-Fonds (1997-1998) in addition to a seventeen-game appearance with Germany’s Dusseldorfer EG in 1995-1996. He returned to American for the 1998-1999 season for eight games with the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, but quickly returned to Switzerland to skate with ZSC Lions Zurich (2000-2001) and HC La Chaux-de-Fonds (2001-2002). After a five-season tenure with Germany’s Frankfurt Lions from 2002 through 2007, he tried out unsuccessfully for their Füchse Duisburg club. Since 2008 he has played with Austria’s Vienna Capitals.
