Biography

Bashir Mohamed Attarabulsi was a top basketball player with the Al-Ittihad Tripoli Club who was voted the best Libyan player in 1957-58. He was also a Scout in the 1950s. After graduating he became head of the sports committee at Libyan University from 1962-70. He was also Secretary-General of the Libyan Table Tennis Federation starting in 1962 and then became first Secretary and then President of the Libyan Athletics Federation. In 1971, at only 34-years-old, he became President of the Libyan Olympic Committee. He later had roles as Vice-President of Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) (1981-85), was on the technical committee for the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) from 1983-87, then becoming Vice-President of ICMG, and was a member of the Executive Board of the Arab Sports Confederation (1976-81).

Attarabulsi became an IOC Member in June 1977. He served the IOC as a member of the Press Commision (1983-84), the Commission for the Olympic Programme (1984-94), and the Sport for All Commission (1996-99). Attarabulsi was investigated during the Olympic Bribery Scandal in 1999-2000 for allegations of inappropriate behavior and tendered his resignation to the IOC during that investigation. He remained active in sports administration, however, and, among other things, was a member of the Organizing Committee for the 2013 Mediterranean Games
