Biography

Raúl de Castro studied at a military school where he competed in track & field athletics, but he was best known for his fencing skill. He won multiple local and regional titles, mainly with the sabre, but he competed with all three weapons. De Castro was a career military man and rose to the rank of General. He was a member of the Army’s Higher Council for Physical Education and led the Armed Forces Physical Education Commission. He was a member of the Portuguese Olympic Committee from 1949. In fencing he served as a judge at international championships and was chairman of the FIE International Sabre Jury. He was co-opted onto the IOC in 1963 and remained a member until 1989, serving as an Honorary Member for the remaining two years of his life.
