Biography

HRH Prince Frederik of Denmark was an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member from 2009-21, after which he was made an Honorary Member of the IOC. Prince Frederik was educated at Harvard and then obtained a master’s degree in political science from the University of Aarhus in Denmark. Although a Prince, he served in the Danish military from 1987-2015, graduating as a Frogman from the naval elite special operations forces Frømandskorpset in 1995, the Danish equivalent of the US Navy Seals or the British Royal Marines Special Boat Service.

Prince Frederik left the military in 2015 as a major general in the Army and Air Force and was also a rear admiral in the Navy. In 2000 he notably completed Expedition Sirius 2000, a four-month and 2,795 km long dogsled expedition in northern Greenland. With the IOC Prince Frederik participated on the following commissions: Sport for All (2010-15), Coordination for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in 2018 in PyeongChang (2011-18), Olympic Programme (2014-15), Sport and Environment (2014-15), Sustainability and Legacy (2015-21), Sport and Active Society (2015-21), Coordination for the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2020 in Lausanne (2015-20), and the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad Paris 2024 (2017-21).
