Biography

Francisco Elizalde studied in the United States, at the Loyola School in New York; Staunton Military Academy, and Harvard University. He later became a prominent businessman in the Philippines, starting several companies and managing them, such as Elizalde International, Elizalde Paint & Oil, Elizalde Rope Factory, Elizalde Security Equipment, among others.

His career in sports administration started early when Elizalde was the manager of the Harvard swim team in 1953-54. He later served several roles with the Filipino Football Federation, eventually serving as President from 1982-86. He became a member of the Philippine Olympic Committee in 1982. He also served on several committees and boards related to several editions of the South East Asian Games.

Elizalde was co-opted onto the IOC in 1985, and served until 2012, when he turned 80, at which time he was made an Honorary Member and awarded the Olympic Order in Silver. He served on the following IOC Commissions: Chairman, Nominations Commission; Marketing; Enquiry for the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in 2000; Cultural; Evaluation for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in 2004; Coordination for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004; IOC 2000; Nominations; Evaluation for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008; and Ethics.
