Biography

Habu Gamel became an IOC Member in 2009 and served on the IOC for 10 years, before being named an Honorary Member. Gumel was an engineer who studied at the Technical College in Kano from 1961-66 and studied at the Civil Engineering Institute in Kyiv from 1970-76. He later worked as a civil engineer with Bauchi State Co-Operative Building Association and then in the 1980s was director of engineering with the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme. He was also Deputy General Manager of the Federal Housing Authority in Lagos, where he was responsible for providing mass housing in the Nigerian capital.

In sports administration Gumel started with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation as chairman in 1988, and eventually became President of the Confederation of African Volleyball from 2001-10 and from 2014-20. He was named an executive vice-president of the FIVB in 2008, and served as an executive board member of the Association of the National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and was President of Zone 3 in ANOCA.

With the IOC Gumel served on several commissions, as follows: Sport and Environment (2010-15), TV Rights and New Media (2014-2015), Coordination for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 (2013-19), Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport (2015-18), Olympic Channel (2015-19), Evaluation for the Games of XXXIII Olympiad in 2024 (2016-17); and a delegate member for the broadcast rights to Africa.
