Biography

Austin Sealy was a Barbadian banker from 1958-93 and served as Barbadian ambassador to the United Kingdom and Israel in 1993-94. In sports administration he is best known as the driving force behind the creation of the CARIFTA Games – an annual track & field athletics festival of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA).

Sealy was President of the AAA of Barbados from 1970-78 and 1981-88. He was President of the Barbados Olympic Association from 1982-96. He also worked with the Commonwealth Games Federation, serving as Honorary Treasurer from 1986-2015, and he was named an Honorary Life Vice-President in 2015. Sealy was chairman of the Organizing Committee for CARIFTA in 1972, 1977, 1985, and 1989. He also directed the Barbados Organizing Committee for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

Sealy was awarded the Silver Crown of Merit (SCM) National Honour from Barbados in1985. He was Knighted by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2015. During his time on the IOC Sealy was a member of several commissions, as follows: Olympic Solidarity (1995-2001), Coordination for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 in Beijing (2002-08), Coordination for the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012 in London (2005-12), International Relations (2013-15), and Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport (2015-19).
