Biography

Gyűla von Muzsa was named to the IOC in April 1909 and served until his death in 1946. Von Muzsa studied pharmacy in Budapest, and later studied in Paris, London, Belgium, and Switzerland. While in London, he played football on the Isle of Wight, as one of the first Hungarians to play the sport. He was eventually elected Vice-President of the Association of Hungarian Pharmacists.

Von Muzsa was also active in politics, entering Parliament in 1906 for the Independence Party and being re-elected in 1910 on the Kossuth Party ticket. He was later a member of the National Assembly (elected 1919) and the Upper House (elected 1927). Von Muzsa was suspended from the IOC in 1919 because of Hungary’s role in World War I but was reinstated in 1921. He was President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee from 1927-40.
