Hugh Weir’s business career was a the manager of a shipping company, which later led to his appointment as President of the Ship Owners’ Association. In 1923 he was named Treasurer of the Victorian Olympic Council. He also helped with the organization of the 1938 British Empire Games at Sydney and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Weir was co-opted onto the IOC in September 1946 and remained a member until March 1975. In 1972 he ran for Vice-President of the IOC, but did not reach the final round of balloting.
