Biography
Jim Vopicka was a shortstop who played for the USA at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the demonstration baseball tournament. Vopicka played in college at the University of Illinois and he also played basketball for the Fighting Illini. After college he was the fifth overall pick of the 1966 Major League Baseball Draft by the California Angels.
Vopicka played in the minor leagues from 1966-71 but he never made it to the majors. He started with the Quad Cities Angels of the Midwest League in 1966. Vopicka made it to Triple-A, playing with the Eugene Emeralds of the Pacific Coast League in 1970-71 but retired after that season. He started in the minors mostly playing shortstop but later played second base. Vopicka had a career minor league average of .237.
