Biography

Derek Bouchard-Hall was a track cyclist who rode the team pursuit at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. A runner in high school, an injury while in college at Princeton led him to start cycling. He graduated from Princeton in 1992 with a degree in architectural engineering and then earned a master’s degree in structural engineering at Stanford in 1994.

After his studies ended, Bouchard-Hall began cycling professionally, first with Team Shaklee and then with the Mercury Cycling Team. He helped the USA team pursuit win gold at the 1999 Pan American Games. On the roads he was US Criterium Champion in 2000, and competed at Paris-Roubaix and Gent-Wevelgem.

Bouchard-Hall retired in 2004 mainly due to an unusual medical problem that required vascular surgery to restore blood circulation and relieve numbness in his legs. He returned to school while still cycling and earned an MBA degree at Harvard Business School, graduating in 2004.

After Harvard Bouchard-Hall worked in management consulting in Boston and London. He was interim director of the US Small Business Administration’s HUBZone program in 2009-10. In 2015 he became the President and CEO of USA Cycling, but he left that position in 2018 to become CEO of Assos in Switzerland, a manufacturer of cycling clothing.
