Biography

Arthur Wellmann was a German graphic artist and sculptor. After an apprenticeship as a sculptor in his hometown Magdeburg, he attended the Art School and Art Academy in Berlin. After World War I, where he was severely wounded, he worked only odd jobs. Wellmann also offered his services to the Nazis. In Berlin he created the first anti-Semitic memorial, the Fritsch-Memorial, and the monumental relief Nibelungen Wacht (Nibelungen Watch) and the SA Memorial.

After the World War II Wellmann earned his living from book illustrations (fairy tales and legends books). He later followed his daughter to the United States, where he worked as an assistant in a lamp factory.
