Biography

Jacek Żuławski was a Polish painter, sculptor, illustrator, a creator of monumental art, a graphic designer, and a mountaineer and sailor. He later became an art professor in Gdansk. Żuławski studied in Kraków and Warszawa together with his cousin Marek Żuławski (1908-85), a painter, graphic artist, and art historian, but Jacek finally continued his studies in Paris.

After the outbreak of World War II, Jacek Żuławski returned to Warszawa, and was active in the resistance movement. After the war he reactivated the Association of Polish Artists and Designers, and then with a group of artists came to Gdańsk as a co-founder of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Sopot. He mostly painted landscapes, portraits, and intimate still lifes. He was married to the artist Hanna Żuławska (1908-1988), a painter, ceramist, and university teacher. The colored mosaic Football (match) (Piłka nożna) dates from 1948 and has a format of 86 x 143 cm. It is located in the Polish Sports Museum.
