Biography

Folke Persson was a Swedish visual artist, graphic artist, and craftsman who studied book art and graphics at the Handicraft Society School in Göteberg and the Art Academy in Stockholm, and traveled through several European countries and North Africa. Many summers he spent in scenic places in Sweden, often with fellow painters. He was described as an expressionist impressionist who painted portraits of the environment, landscapes from Bohuslän, railway embankments and harbor scenes. Persson also produced theater decorations, illustrated his own and others’ books, and performed lithographs and book bindings. His second wife was artist Britt-Carin (Britta) Krüger (1923-2005).

Of Persson’s known paintings, Vind i seglen, Styrsö (Wind in the Sails, Styrsö) is probably the most likely candidate for the submitted work Downwind Sailing. Painted in oil on canvas in the format 50 x 60 cm, it shows a scenery of the island of Styrsö, which is off the coast of Göteborg (Gothenburg).
