German sailor René Schwall partnered Roland Gäbler in the multihull tornado class at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and won the bronze medal. The crew was then awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.

Together with his brother Oliver, René won the bronze medal at the 1991 World Championships, the silver medal a year later, and eventually the gold medal in 1993. In 1994, they added a bronze medal at the Europeans.

In 1997 Schwall partnered Roland Gäbler and they won the German national title from 1997-99, and the Europeans from 1998-2000. At World Championships, the pair won gold in 1997 and 2000, silver in 1998 and bronze in 1999. Schwall became a graduated medical practitioner with his own practice at Altenholz.
