Biography

Ulrike Schmidt was a German beach volleyball player who tied ninth with Gudi Staub at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Schmidt won the German national title with Staub in 1996, 1998, and 2000; earlier she played with Maike Friedrichsen. With non-Olympian Andrea Ahmann, Schmidt won a bronze medal at the 2001 European Championships.

Schmidt started her sports career as an indoor volleyball player in 1983. She played at club level with TG RE Schwelm (1983-87), TV Hörde (1987-90), USC Münster (1990-92), TSG Tübingen (1992-93), Münster again (1993-98), and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1998-2000). In 1992, she helped Münster win the German national title and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. In 1994, she again helped Münster win the CEV Cup, and in 1996 the German national title, German Cup, and CEV Cup. She won the German national title and German Cup again the following year.

In 1998, Schmidt was named Volleyball Player of the Year in Germany. In total, she won 75 international caps. By profession, she became a graduated sports teacher, and sports and tourism manager. She also became National Coach responsible for youth work (male U18/U19). With the West German Volleyball Association she was additionally the regional association trainer for beach volleyball until 2016.
