Biography

Todd Martin lost his first-round match in singles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but it hardly reflects his solid career as a tennis professional. Martin played tennis at Northwestern University for two years before turning pro.

Martin won eight titles on the ATP Tour with a highest ranking of #4 in the world in September 1999. He made the final of the Australian Open in 1994 and the US Open in 1999 but was unable to break through to a Grand Slam title. He also reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1994 and 1996. While playing he led the ATP Player’s Council as President and was on the board of directors of the US Tennis Association. Martin received the ATP’s Most Improved Player Award in 1993, the ATP Sportsmanship Award in 1993 and 1994, the 2002 Jean Borotra Sportsmanship Award, and the ATP World Team Cup Fair Play Award in 2003.

After leaving the ATP Tour in the early 2000s, Martin coached a bit, mentoring Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish. He also played on the Outback Champions Tour, winning three titles in 2006-08, defeating John McEnroe in the finals of all three.

In 1993 Martin founded the Todd Martin Youth Leadership in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan, teaching tennis, education, and leadership principles to young children in the area. He also went into sports administration, became the CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and later became the tournament director at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has also served on the board of directors of the Tennis Industry Association.

Todd Martin has been inducted into several Hall of Fames including Northwestern University (2001), Greater Lansing Sports (2002), the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (2007), and the USTA Midwest (2008).
