Biography

After two seasons with the Weyburn Jr. B Red Wings from 1961 through 1963, ice hockey forward Morris Mott began playing at the full junior level and spent 1963 through 1965 with the Weyburn Red Wings of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. After suiting up for several playoff games with the Regina Pats, he joined the Canadian national men’s ice hockey team in 1965 and skated for his country with them until 1970. Along the way he won bronze medals at the 1966 and 1967 World Championships and the 1968 Winter Olympics. At the latter tournament he played in seven matches and scored five goals, which distinguished him as the Canadian goal leader of the Games. During his time with the team, he was also studying history, and he obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Manitoba. His next stop was Queen’s University, where he intended to earn his Ph.D. in history, and he spent two years from 1970 through 1972 with the Queen’s University Golden Gaels. He opened 1972 playing with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the Western Hockey League, but the California Golden Seals of the National Hockey League wanted him on the ice, and he suited up for 199 games with the team between 1972 and 1975. At the end of his tenure he had returned to the Golden Eagles, now members of the Central Hockey League, and decided to takes his talents to Europe, where he skated for one year with Västra Frölunda IF Göteborg of Sweden. Upon his return to Canada, he played in two games with the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association prior to retiring from active play in 1976. Having earned his Ph.D., he is now a professor of history at Brandon University in Manitoba.
