Based in Montreal since at least his 1929-1930 season with the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, ice hockey defenseman Herman Murray spent almost his entire career from 1930-1940 with either the Montreal Royals (1933-1935, 1936-1940) or the Montreal Victorias (1930-1933, 1935-1936). While a member of the latter team, he was called up for the one exception to his Montreal hockey affiliation when he was invited to join the Port Arthur Bearcats on their journey representing Canada at the 1936 Winter Olympics. He was selected as the captain of the Canadian ice hockey team that took the silver medal at these Games and scored five goals in eight matches at the tournament. He spent the rest of his career with the Royals, winning the Allan Cup with them in 1939, an annual trophy given to the Canadian senior men’s ice hockey champion.
