José María Palomo loved motorsport and competed in rally driving, motorcycle races, and powerboating. In the 1960s there was a boom in motorsports in Spain, with Palomo making his début as a rally co-driver in 1963. By 1967 he was competing in Formula 3 races, racing in the Barcelona Grand Prix towards the end of the decade. As a rally driver he won three races in his Porsche 911 in 1969, including the prestigious Spanish Rally Championship. Switching to two wheels, Palomo competed in a variety of motorcycle races, including six editions of the 24 Hours of Montjuïc, and multiple hill climb events.
On the water Palomo was an accomplished powerboat racer, winning the International Nautical Week in 1966, along with several events in the Spanish Championship. He could water ski too and won events in Catalonia. In addition to land and water, Palomo was also at home on the ice, which saw him and compatriot José Manuel Pérez represent Spain in the two-man bobsleigh at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, finishing 13th out of the 22 teams to compete.
