Biography

Jacques Peten was a Belgian sportsman. After starting out as a skier, Peten had a more distinguished career as a tennis player. Peten competed in Alpine skiing at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics. Peten completed the downhill but did not finish the slalom.

After World War II Peten became an accomplished tennis player and was Belgian number two for many years. In 1946, along with Jack Van den Eynde, Peten was the Belgian doubles champion. Peten won the Belgian singles title in 1950. Peten competed at Wimbledon from 1946 to 1954 where he reached the third round on three occasions (1946, 1947, 1949). Peten played at the French Open from 1947 to 1953. Peten’s best performance was when he reached the fourth round in 1947.

Peten was part of the Belgian Davis Cup team from 1946 to 1951. His best Davis Cup result was reaching the semi-finals of the Europe Zone in 1946. Peten also reached the quarter-finals of the Europe Zone in the Davis Cup in 1947 and 1948.

Including the Belgian title that Peten won in 1950, he won four singles finals from 1948 to 1957, all on clay.
