Biography

Despite suiting up for only one National Hockey League game during his entire ice hockey career, defenseman Dan Ratushny found much success in his sport of choice. After spending the 1987-1988 season with the Nepean Raiders of the Central Junior Hockey League, he entered Cornell University and joined the Canadian men’s national ice hockey team in 1988. During the next three years he found success at Cornell and was recruited by the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets in 1989, in addition to winning a gold medal at the 1990 Junior World Championships. He skated exclusively for Team Canada during the 1991-1992 season (save for two guest appearances with Switzerland’s EHC Olten), and attended the 1992 Winter Olympics where Canada won a silver medal, its first Olympic podium finish in the sport since 1968. Upon his return he spent the majority of the 1992-1993 season with the Fort Wayne Komets of the International Hockey League, although the Vancouver Canucks put him on the ice for his sole NHL game in 1993. He then spent several uneventful seasons in the minor leagues with American Hockey League’s Hamilton Canucks (1993-1994), Carolina Panthers (1995-1996), and Albany River Rats (1997-1998), as well as the IHL’s Komets (1994-1995), Peoria Rivermen (1995-1996), Quebec Rafales (1996-1998), and Kansas City Blades (1998-1999).

Ratushny then decided to go abroad, spending a season each with Japan’s Seibu-Tetsudo Tokyo, and Finland’s HPK Hameenlinna, and then two with Scotland’s Dundee Stars. He had returned to Cornell to finish his Economics Degree in 1997, and then acquired an M.B.A. from the HEC Paris/University of Strathclyde Business School in 2003. He took a break from hockey to work towards a law degree from the University of Ottawa, which he earned in 2006, but spent the 2005-2006 season in Switzerland with IK Pantern. As of 2009 he is an attorney with Stikeman & Elliott in Toronto, Ontario, but will be the head coach of EHC Olten for the 2009-2010 season.
