Tommy Samuelsson played most of his career from 1976-98 with Färjestad BK, except at the end of his career, when he played two seasons with Wiener EV in Austria (1995-96, 1997-98) and one season with SC Luzern in Switzerland (1996-97). With Färjestad, Samuelsson won Swedish titles in 1981, 1986 and 1988 and was awarded the Goldpucken Award as the best player of the 1986 Swedish championships. Samuelsson earned 214 caps with the Swedish national team, winning Olympic bronzes in 1980 and 1988 and World Championship silvers in 1981, 1986 and 1990. He was also a European champion in 1990, won silvers at the 1981, 1982 and 1986 European Championships and bronzes at the 1983 and 1989 European Championships. As a junior he won gold at the 1977 European Junior Championship, silver at the 1978 World Junior Championship and bronzes at the 1979 and 1980 World Junior Championships. He was awarded the Stora Grabbars Märke (Big Boys’ Badge) #114 in ice hockey.
After finishing his playing career, Samuelsson became a successful ice hockey coach. From 1999-04, he was the assistant coach of Färjestad BK and from 2004-06 was head coach of HC Innsbruck in Austria. In parallel to those positions, he was also assistant coach of the Swedish national team from 2002-06. In 2006-07, Samuelsson was head coach of Skellefteå AIK, while in 2007-11 he was head coach of Färjestad BK, coaching them to Swedish titles in 2009 and 2011. In 2011, he became head coach of the Vienna Capitals in Austria.
