Biography

George Lawton took part in the inaugural folding kayak singles 10,000 metres event at the 1936 Olympics. It was the first overseas competition for the recently formed British Canoe Association, and Lawton finished a commendable eighth. The son of a draughtsman, the highlight of Lawton’s sporting career was in winning the 1939 C-1 British canoe title ever 1,000 metres. His Croydon flatmate, and later a fellow Olympian, John Simmons won the kayak title at the same meeting.
