Biography

Gildo Siorpaes was primarily a successful alpine skier and started competitive skiing with the Cortina Ski Club in 1956. In 1960 he joined the national alpine ski team and remained part of the team until 1974. In 1963 he won the Italian Championships in downhill skiing and placed third in the following two years. He won a bronze medal in the men’s four-man bob at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics, sliding with Eugenio Monti’s crew and comprising his brother Sergio Siorpaes and Benito Rigoni. From 1967-70 Gildo Siorpaes was coach of the Italian women’s alpine ski team, first the B-team and later the A-team. From 1979-95 he was director of the Ski School South in Cortina. He served as chairman of the Cortina Ski Club from 1980-82. With his brother Roberto he founded the prestigious Summer School on Marmolada mountain where triple gold medalist Alberto Tomba trained.
