Biography

Skier Georg von “Schorsch” Kaufmann was the flag-bearer of the German team at the 1936 Garmisch Winter Olympics. He finished 20th in the 18 km cross country event. Von Kaufmann was a forester, athlete and mountaineer, folk musician, folk dance collector and dance master in Upper Bavaria. In 1952 he completed the first winter ascent of the east wall of the Watzmann, the third highest mountain in Germany.
