Biography

Roy Wagelein grew up in Los Angeles, attending the Hollywood Professional School and skating for the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club. He started skating pairs nationally with Susan Berens, placing second at the US Championships with her in 1966-67. Together they were 11th at the 1966 World Championships and seventh at the 1967 Worlds. Wagelein then switched to Sandi Sweitzer as his partner, and they had one year of amateur competition together in 1968, in which they placed second at the US Championships, eighth at the Worlds, and seventh at the Winter Olympics. They then turned professionals and skated with the Ice Capades. But they also married and settled in Phoenix, Arizona, where Wagelein coached. Wagelein and Sweitzer had one daughter together, but later divorced.

He had the following placements at major international championships - Pairs: 1968 World Championships (8th) (with Sandi Sweitzer [USA]). 1966 World Championships (11th); 1967 World Championships (7th) (with Susan Behrens (a non-Olympian) [USA]).
