Biography

German flatwater canoeist Ulrich Papke partnered Ingo Spelly and won a silver and gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics in the 500 and the 1,000 metres Canadian doubles. Papke also won three gold, three silver and five bronze medals, representing East Germany and reunified Germany at the World Championships.

Papke was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. He also received the TV media prize _BAMBI in 1992. In 2006, Papke emigrated to Norway to earn his living as a painter. His father Horst was a well-known East German theatre and film actor.
