Description

South Sudan became independent in July 2011. The National Olympic Committee (NOC) was founded on 8 June 2015 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, on 2 August 2015. However, South Sudan was already represented at the 2012 London Olympics, by marathoner Guor Marial, who competed as an Independent Olympic Athlete (IOA) (since South Sudan was not yet an IOC Member). Prior to independence, several athletes from what is now South Sudan also represented Sudan at the Olympics.

South Sudan has competed at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, but has not competed at the Winter Olympics yet. It has also not won any medals yet. Its best participation came at its début, with Marial, by then competing for South Sudan, finishing 81st in a field of 155 athletes.
