Equestrian Jumping at the 2020 Summer Olympics

Dates 3 – 7 August 2021
Medal Events 2

A major change in regulations between Rio and Tokyo was the reduction of show jumping teams from four down to three. The show jumping team event was also significantly shortened from previous editions. In team jumping, if one member of a team was eliminated, they could still be classified, although they would be automatically placed after teams with three finishers.

The Games were a triumph for the Swedish team who only knocked 2 fences down in their combined fifteen rounds across the individual and team competitions. Despite this, they needed a jump-off to beat the USA for team gold and missed out on the individual gold because of a fleet footed clear by the horse Explosion W and rider Ben Maher for Great Britain. Sweden’s gold medal was their first in this discipline since the Paris Games of 1924. Much publicity was given to the appearance of Jessica Springsteen, daughter of rock star Bruce, who was a silver medallist as part of the US team.
