Archery is a sport which has a long history. In the modern Olympics, the format uses the recurve bow. A ranking round of 72 arrows at 70 metres from the target determined the seedings for the elimination tournaments within each event. Elimination matches were held as head-to-head matches, with the winner being determined by set points. The winner of the set was awarded two points, with a tie resulting in one point each. The first archer (or team) to reach 6 points was the winner. If scores were level at 5 - 5 after the end of 5 sets (or 4 - 4 after the end of 4 sets in team events), a shoot-off was held to determine the winner.
Qualification to the Olympic tournaments was via a series of world and continental championships. Historically, the Republic of Korea had been the strongest nation in this sport, and they maintained that during the 2024 Games. As an example of their strength, An San, who was a triple Olympic gold medalist from 2020, was not even selected to represent the Republic of Korea at the 2024 Games. If the Republic of Korea were thought to be vulnerable it was in the individual events. However, Korea won all five archery events at the 2024 Games, Kim Wu-Jin and Im Si-Hyeon each winning three gold medals, so maintaining their dominance in the sport. Events were held at Les Invalides, a district of Paris dedicated to France’s military history.
