Sport Climbing at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Dates 5 – 10 August 2024
Medal Events 4
Venues Le Bourget Climbing Venue, La Bourget, France

Sport climbing events took place from August 5 to August 10, 2024. The schedule was structured to allow athletes the opportunity to compete in both events if they qualified. Women’s speed finals were held on August 7, men’s speed finals on August 8, men’s boulder and lead finals on August 9, and women’s boulder and lead finals on August 10. The sport climbing events were held at the newly constructed Le Bourget Climbing Centre, in Seine-Saint-Denis, just north of Paris. This venue was one of only two facilities built specifically for the 2024 Olympic Games. It featured five climbing walls: three for competition, one for warm-ups, and an indoor wall for training. The facility was designed to serve local communities after the Olympic Games, addressing a shortage of sports infrastructure in the area.

At Paris 2024, sport climbing featured two events per gender: a combined boulder and lead event, and a standalone speed climbing event. This was a departure from Tokyo 2020, where all three disciplines were combined into a single event.

In Boulder & Lead Combined, athletes competed in both disciplines, with scores from each added together for a maximum of 200 points. Bouldering included four problems, each worth up to 25 points, with deductions of 0.1 points for each failed attempt. Lead climbing awarded points based on the height reached, with higher moves yielding more points.

The Speed Climbing event followed a head-to-head knockout format on a standardized 15 metre wall. Athletes raced side-by-side, with the fastest climber advancing to the next round. The number of competitors increased from 40 in Tokyo to 68 in Paris, with 28 athletes in speed and 40 in the combined event, equally divided between men and women.
