Golf was on the Olympic Programme for the third consecutive Olympic Games, after not having been held from 1908-2012. The events consisted of the standard 72-hole stroke play events for men and women, with 60 competitors in each event. Qualification was by the respective world golf rankings, with each nation allowed two players if they were in the top 60 in the world. Nations with three or four players in the top 15 in the world could have up to four competitors, but that only affected the United States teams and the Korean women. The remainder of the field was filled out by the lower world rankings.
The events were both contested at Le Golf National, on the Albatros Course, in Guyancourt, a suburb about 20 km southwest of Paris. Built in 1991, Le Golf National has hosted the Open de France since that time, and was the host for the 2018 Ryder Cup and the 1994 and 2022 World Amateur Team Championships.
The Albatros Course played at par 71 for both men and women, and over 6,558 metres (7,174 yards) for the men and at 5,857 m (6,407 yards) for the women.
