The Cortina Sliding Centre Eugenio Monti, a newly built artificial ice track, hosted the luge competitions of the 2026 Winter Olympics, held from 7-12 February. Because the construction started only two years before the Games, the Olympics were the first event to be held. This gave the Italian lugers a slight advantage, because they had more opportunities to get accustomed to the track.
For the first time, five luge events were held, as the open doubles was split into men’s and women’s doubles, in addition to men’s and women’s singles and a mixed team relay. The total number of competitors decreased slightly from 110 to 105, as did the number of nations, from 26 to 19, including two Individual Neutral Athletes.
Germany was again the most successful nation, thanks to victories in both individual events and the relay, after a sweep in all four events in Beijing four years ago. For the first time since Torino (Turin) in 2006 more than one gold went to any other nation when Italy won gold in both doubles events. Three silver medals were won by Austria and one bronze each by Latvia and the USA.
