Biography

Standing only 14 hh, Stroller was technically a pony and was registered as such with the British Show Jumping Association (BJSA). He was bought by Ralph Coakes for his daughter, Marion Coakes, to jump as a junior. Together Stroller and Marion won the 1962 European Junior Championships in Berlin. When she advanced to senior riding, Coakes stayed with Stroller, despite the Connemara pony’s diminutive size.

Stroller carried Coakes to victory at the first Ladies’ World Championships in 1965, and that year they won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at the Royal International Horse Show. In 1968 they won the BJSA National Championship and the John Player Trophy, a Grand Prix event, before earning an individual silver medal at the Mexico City Olympics.

Stroller and Coakes continued together through 1971, winning the Queen’s Cup and National Championship again that year. Together they had five Nations Cup wins – Olsztyn, Dublin, and København in 1965; Rotterdam in 1967; and London in 1970. After his final victory at the Country Life and Riding Cup at the 1971 Horse of the Year Show, Stroller retired to his owner’s farm.
