Description

Motorcycle sports have never been featured in the Olympic Programme, but, at Paris 1900, two motorcycle events were contested during the sporting events held in conjunction with the Exposition Universelle.

Motorcycle sports are governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), which was founded on 21 December 1904 in Paris, France, under the name of Fédération Internationale des Clubs Motocyclistes (FICM). The rebrand to its current name would come in 1949. A member of the Association of the IOC-recognized International Sports Federations (ARISF), as of January 2026, the FIM has 123 national federations as members. The organization’s headquarters is located in Mies, Switzerland, and its current president is Portugal’s Jorge Viegas.

The FIM oversees the motorcycle disciplines of circuit racing, motocross, supercross, supermoto, trial, enduro, cross-country, track racing, and e-bike. The federation organizes several World Championship events, such as the FIM MotoGP World Championship (first staged in 2002 after being called the “Motorcycle World Championship” since 1949), the FIM Superbike World Championship (first held in 1988), and the FIM Motocross World Championship (first staged in 1957), or, for women motorcyclists, the FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship (inaugurated in 2024).
