Description

A few motorcycle events were held at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, alongside the 1900 Paris Olympic Games. Until recently, the Olympic Charter precluded sports depending on mechanical propulsion from appearing on the Olympic Programme, making a return of motorcycling to the Olympics highly unlikely. However, in more recent versions of the Charter, this distinction has been removed.

Motorcycle sports have had three appearances at the World Games, but always as invitational sports. The second edition of the competition, in 1985, included events in speedway and indoor trials. Both disciplines would each appear once more at the World Games, with the 2005 edition including indoor trials competitions, and the 2017 edition bringing back the speedway events.

Motorcycle sports are governed by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), which was founded on 21 December 1904 as the Fédération Internationale des Clubs Motocyclistes (FICM). Rebranded to its current name in 1949, the FIM has 123 national federations as members as of January 2026.
