Frontenis is a variant of basque pelota developed in Mexico around 1900, when tennis players started playing in frontóns. It is conceptually similar to squash and racquetball. The sport is most popular in Mexico, which has also dominated the sport historically (it has provided all world champions save one through 2010).

Defending World Champion Mexico had sent one of its world championship players Jorge Loaiza to play in the tournament, for which the Mexicans were already the favorites. They did not disappoint, winning every match with at least 14 points and an overall points difference of 150-73. Argentina finished in second place, with Aarón Sehter as a team member. Sehter is one of the legends of basque pelota, having won 13 world titles between 1952 and 1982, of which nine in the paleta goma. He would also compete in that event in Mexico placing second as well.
