While men competed in Los Angeles in windsurfing (boardsailing) as a medal sport, using the Windglider, and as a demonstration sport, using the Windsurfer One board, women had only a demonstration sport, using the Windsurfer One, designed by Hoyle Schwitzer. The competition consisted of three phases – slalom, freestyle, and long-distance. Sixteen (16) sailors started with the event won by Canadian Karen Morch, who won the slalom phase, was third in freestyle, and fifth in the long-distance phase. Morch was followed by two Americans – Anne Gardner-Nelson and Andrea Livingston.
