Eight fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. The 1989 and 1991 World Champion was Korean Kim Cheol-Ho, but he did not compete in Barcelona. The final came down to two relative unknowns, with Venezuelan Arlindo Gouveia defeating Indonesian Dirc Talumewo, 2-1. Gouveia had won a bronze medal at the 1990 Pan American Championships.
