There were 20 starters with American Maxey Long, who won the open 400 metres, entered at scratch but not starting. There were six finalists with Dave Hall the highest rated, at 7.0 metres. Hungarian Pál Koppán won easily, however, helped by a 35-metre handicap. The Field noted that Koppán “won easily, but all out”.
