In 1992, roller hockey was contested as a demonstration sport at the Barcelona Olympics, supposedly at the wish of then International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Juan Antonio Samaranch, an avid roller hockey player in his youth. Roller hockey has never been contested at the Olympics at any other time.
Roller hockey is currently governed by World Skate (WS), the IOC-recognized organizational body for roller sports. World Skate resulted from the merger of the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) and the International Skateboarding Federation (ISF) in September 2017. As of 2024, WS had 135 affiliated national federations.
