Sumō, the Japanese traditional form of wrestling, was contested as a demonstration sport at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, as part of the budō demonstration, along with kendō (fencing) and kyudō (archery).
Sumo later appeared as an invitational sport at the 2001 edition of the World Games. From 2005-2022, the competition’s programme included multiple official events in sumo, always with contests for both men and women.
The sport is governed internationally by the International Sumo Federation (ISF), which was founded on 10 December 1992, and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As of January 2026, the ISF has 84 members.
