Biography

The 1948 Scottish bantamweight boxing champion, Tommy Miller of Glasgow, was selected for the London Olympics, but was a non-starter. In the first ever international between Scotland and England to be held south of the border, also in 1948, Miller was Scotland’s sole winner in a 7-1 defeat. When the two nations met the following year, in Scotland, he was again the hosts’ only victor in another 7-1 defeat. Miller retained his Scottish bantamweight title in 1949, when he also won his only ABA title, by beating Steve Lane of Wales in the final. Miller’s performance was regarded as the best of the Championships. He represented Scotland at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland, but lost on points in his first bout to South Africa’s Johnny van Rensburg, the eventual gold medalist.
