Mac Cone

Mac Cone was a member of the silver medal winning jumping team (together with Jill Henselwood, Eric Lamaze, and Ian Millar), at the 2008 Olympic Games in China, where he rode Ole, a 12-year-old Dutch gelding owned by Sara Houstoun and Larry Evoy. A two-time Olympian, Cone is one of two riders to have ever competed as a member of both the Canadian Equestrian Team and the United States Equestrian Team. Ole, who was an iconic horse for the Canadian team, passed away at the age of 22 on 23 November 2018 following a long and happy retirement.

A consistent performer on the international jumping scene for more than 30 years, Cone had a memorable equestrian career. In addition to his Olympic silver medal, other highlights include winning the 1996 Olympic Selection Trials at Spruce Meadows (Alberta, Canada) with Elute; becoming the highest-placed Canadian partnership at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 2002 FEI World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain; silver medalist at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, riding Melinda.

Cone started riding at age 10 and developed his skills under the guidance of renowned jumping coach and legendary horseman Bertalan de Nemethy. Recognized as well for his coaching abilities, Cone trained 1986 World Champion Gail Greenough. American-born, Cone married Canadian Brenley Carpenter in 1974 and moved to Canada in 1979. He operates Southern Ways Stables in Schomberg, Ontario where world champion riders are included as his clients.
