Between 1890-92, Will Evans won 11 English titles at distances from 100-500 yards, and was also runner-up to Sam Greasley in the Mile Championship in 1890, and the 880 yards in 1891. Evans was billed in 1892 as the “World’s Amateur Champion”. He broke the English amateur 220 yards record in 1890 (2:51.5) and the 500 yards record the following year (7:14.0).
