Biography

During the 1960s and 1970s Spanish cyclist Ramón Sáez won multiple stages of the Vuelta a España, captured two medals at the UCI Road World Championships, and competed at the Olympics. As an amateur Sáez was selected to compete at the 1960 Roma Olympics, where he finished eighth in the 100 kilometres team time trial. His first major success came three years later when he won bronze in the road team time trial at the Mediterranean Games. One year later he was part of the Spanish team that won silver in the team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Sallanches, France.

In 1965 Sáez then began to focus on stage races, winning two stages at the Volta a Portugal and one each at both the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and the Vuelta a Mallorca in the same year. Arguably 1967 was his best year, with him winning bronze in the road race at the UCI World Championships, along with stages three and four at the Vuelta a España. Sáez continued to pick up stage wins at the Vuelta, with another one in 1968, followed by two in both 1969 and 1970. In 1969 he became the Spanish road race champion, but was forced to call time on his career only a few years later after suffering a broken shoulder.
